Dangye, where this Buddha image stands, has long suffered frequent flood damage from an overflowing stream, and the statue is said to have been erected in the Goryeo period to prevent such disasters. It is so badly worn that its original condition is hard to determine, and the face is said to have been brought from elsewhere nearby and attached to the body. A topknot-shaped bun rises high above the head, and the face is full-fleshed, giving a rich sense of volume. The body has broad, angular shoulders and comparatively wide knees. The chest in particular is well developed, expressing a sturdy build, but unfortunately most of the right side has broken away. The robe covers only the left shoulder, with thick drapery folds clearly rendered; the folds above the knees in particular form semicircular curves to left and right. The right hand is missing, but since the left hand appears to hold something like a medicine bowl, the image is thought to represent the Medicine Buddha. Of the pedestal, only the upper tier, carved with an upward-facing lotus pattern, and the lower tier, carved with an inverted lotus pattern, survive. The parallel drapery folds, the form of the lotus pedestal and the somewhat meagre rendering of the knees suggest that this is a work of the Goryeo period.
