This was the first Christian church established in the Gyeongbuk region, where missionaries carried out modern medical care and education to enlighten the area. In 1895, the 32nd year of Emperor Gojong, the Northern Presbyterian mission headquarters in Busan relocated to Daegu, and in 1898, the second year of the Gwangmu era, four tile-roofed houses were used as the church building. As the congregation continued to grow, a new church building combining traditional and Western architectural styles was built in 1908. In 1933, the church was rebuilt with donations from the congregation and contributions from the Central Church, and it was renamed Daegu Jeil Church. In early 1937, a 33-metre bell tower was erected under Elder Lee Ju-yeol, the interior was renovated in 1969, and in 1981 a sanctuary of 156 pyeong (about 516 m²) was added behind the building. The building today has a floor plan in the form of a rectangle elongated north–south; it is a simple Gothic-style building with an entrance porch at the centre of the front and a bell tower on the right. The first floor is used as offices, a kindergarten and a youth chapel, and the entire second floor serves as the main chapel. Daegu Jeil Church has the longest history of the many church buildings in Daegu, and as a symbol of Christianity's contribution to modernisation, it is valuable material for the study of modern architectural history.
