This is a water gate that once stood over the Dongnakcheon Stream, which flows through the centre of Ganghwa-eup. It was first installed in 1711, the 37th year of King Sukjong of Joseon, built in connection with the inner wall when the inner fortifications of Ganghwasanseong Fortress were constructed. In 1900, the fourth year of the Gwangmu era, it was moved to the mouth of the stream so that it could serve as a passage to the Gapgot ferry crossing. It was later moved again to its present location and restored in 1977. It is 18.2 m long, 2.7 m high and 4.7 m wide, with three rainbow-shaped (arched) openings, built of dressed granite.
