Wira-ri Seven-story Stone Pagoda
위라리칠층석탑 · 位羅里七層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seven-story stone pagoda remaining at the site of an old Goryeo-period temple. Its base stones, body stones and roof stones had been scattered in all directions and were gathered up and re-erected; the roof stones and the body stones of the first, second and third storeys are original, while the body stones from the fourth storey upward were added during restoration in 1975. The pagoda takes the form of a seven-storey body set on a large base stone. Corner pillars are carved on each edge of the body stones, and the height decreases sharply from the first storey to the second, after which it decreases only very slightly storey by storey. The roof stones have three-tiered supports on their undersides, and the eaves run horizontal but curve up slightly at the four corners. At the top, the finial ornaments have all been lost, leaving only a single round stone. Although smaller in scale, the carved corner pillars on the body stones and the three-tiered roof-stone supports closely resemble the style and technique of the Seven-story Stone Pagoda at the Namgyewon Temple Site, Gaeseong (a National Treasure), suggesting that the two pagodas were made in a similar period.
