Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha
석 비로자나불좌상 · 石 毘盧舍那佛 坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a granite seated Buddha statue, 1.5 m tall, on display at the Kansong Art Museum. The head is covered with small snail-shell-shaped curls of hair, above which rises a large topknot in the shape of a bun. The robe covers both shoulders, and the folds of the robe are rendered in a somewhat formulaic manner. Both hands are raised to the chest, with the right hand wrapping around the index finger of the left, the typical hand gesture taken by Vairocana Buddha. The square pedestal on which the statue sits is carved with a double layer of lotus-flower patterns. Given the formulaic rendering of the robe folds and other features, this statue is presumed to be a work of the mid-Goryeo period.
