Sinwonsa Temple Five-story Stone Pagoda
신원사오층석탑 · 新元寺五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis five-storey stone pagoda stands south of Jungakdan, the altar for the mountain spirit of Gyeryongsan Mountain. Only the roof stones of the first four storeys survive today, but the pagoda originally appears to have carried a five-storey body on a two-tiered base. Pillar shapes are carved on the lower base and on the body stones, imitating the pillars of wooden architecture. The roof stones have three-tiered supports on their undersides, and the eaves are almost horizontal. To the west of the pagoda stands a baeryeoseok, a stone placed before a pagoda for performing rites. This dignified pagoda is thought to have been built in the early Goryeo period. During dismantling and restoration work on the pagoda in December 1975, a reliquary was found inside the body stone of the first storey, together with coins identified as Gaewontongbo, Hamwontongbo and Hwangsongtongbo, a porcelain kettle with its spout and handle broken off, and a long-necked bottle made of green glass.
