Three-story Stone Pagoda at Samjangsa Temple Site, Sancheong
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This pagoda remains on the old site of Samjangsa Temple; the pieces that had collapsed and scattered were partly gathered and re-erected. Nothing is known of the origin of the temple's name or its history, but the surrounding area, now turned into fields, still contains stone remains such as building foundations, confirming that this was once a temple site. The pagoda consists of a three-storey body raised on a two-tiered foundation that supports the weight of the whole structure; it is presumed to have originally been a five-storey stone pagoda. On both the upper and lower tiers of the foundation, pillar shapes are carved at each corner and at the centre of every side. The body stones of each storey have corner-pillar carvings only, with no other decoration. The roof stones have four-tiered supports on their undersides, and the eaves lines, though otherwise horizontal, curve up slightly only at the two ends. Presumed to have been a five-storey pagoda, it is a rare form among Unified Silla stone pagodas. Details such as the reduction of the roof-stone undersides to four tiers show a simplified, weakened style, suggesting that the work dates from the late Unified Silla period, sometime after the 9th century.
