Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Banya baramilda simgyeong, commonly abbreviated as the 'Banya simgyeong' (Heart Sutra of Great Wisdom), is a universal scripture recited and read in common across many Buddhist sects. This sutra is a detailed, phrase-by-phrase commentary on the Banya baramilda simgyeong written by the monk Taejeonhwasang, printed as a single woodblock-printed volume. Taejeonhwasang was an eminent monk of Tang China who, in the 7th year of King Wonseong (791), founded a Seon meditation hall which he named Yeongsan ('Spirit Mountain'); as many as 1,000 disciples received the Dharma from him, and he took for himself the sobriquet Taejeonhwasang. This edition was published in 1411, the 11th year of King Taejong of Joseon, at Munsusa Temple in Gochang, North Jeolla Province, and is valued as important material for the study of early Joseon Buddhist scriptures and bibliography.
