Dogokjae was a house used by students for study. It was first built as a residence in 1778, the second year of King Jeongjo of Joseon, by Seojeonggong Bak Mun-hyeon, who held the office of daesaseong (head of the National Confucian Academy); around 1800, the 24th year of King Jeongjo, it came to be used as the study of Dogok Bak Jong-u, and was named Dogokjae after his pen name, Dogok. It measures four kan across the front and one kan to the side; in later times a toekan (extended eave bay) was added and the daecheong (open wooden-floored hall) was enlarged, giving it the appearance of a pavilion. Dogokjae is a modest building with the structure typical of residential houses of the Taebaeksan region.
