Boryeong Suburigwibu and Isu
보령수부리귀부및이수 · 保寧水芙里龜趺및螭首

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the memorial stele of an eminent monk, of which only the turtle-shaped base stone (gwibu) and the dragon-head capstone (isu) were found on the surrounding hillside, the stele body itself being missing; as a result, the identity of the monk it commemorates cannot be determined. Judging, however, from the carving technique, style and size, together with the broken remains of a finely worked octagonal wondang-style monk's stupa nearby, it is presumed to be the stele and stupa of some renowned monk of the Goryeo period. The seal-script title panel at the centre front of the capstone carries no inscription, but its dragon and cloud patterns are elaborate and delicate, and the turtle-shell pattern, feet, rings and whiskers on the base are likewise carved with great vitality.
