Geungnakbojeon Hall of Baegyangsa Temple, Jangseong
장성 백양사 극락보전 · 長城 白羊寺 極樂寶殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBaegamsa Temple is said to have been founded in 632, the 33rd year of King Mu of Baekje, by the monk Yeohwan, and was rebuilt many times over the centuries. The present temple buildings were rebuilt in 1917 by Song Man-am. Records state that the Geungnakbojeon Hall was built in 1574, the 7th year of King Seonjo of Joseon, by the Seon master Han Eung, though this cannot be confirmed with certainty. However, the Joseon Sachal Saryo (Historical Records of Joseon Temples) shows that Queen Munjeong, consort of King Jungjong of Joseon (r. 1506–1544), took part in the building's construction. The hall is three bays wide and four bays deep, with a gable roof whose profile forms the shape of the character '人' (person). The brackets that support the roof while also serving a decorative function follow the dapo style, a multi-cluster bracket type placed both above the columns and between them, rather than only atop the columns. Inside the hall are monochrome wall paintings executed in a restrained, understated technique. The Geungnakbojeon Hall of Baegyangsa Temple is the oldest building on the temple grounds, and it is unusual in combining, in an eclectic manner, the dapo bracket style with a gable roof, a pairing rarely seen together.
