Geunggudang Hall

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the detached hall (byeoldang) of the head house of the mid-Joseon civil official Yi Hyeon-bo (1467–1555), pen name Nongam. It was built by Yi Heon-gong, who held the post of soyun, of the Yeongcheon Yi clan, and was later rebuilt by Yi Hyeon-bo's son Yi Mun-nyang after the original building had fallen into disrepair. The name 'Geunggudang' is taken from a passage in the Book of Documents meaning to carry on the achievements of one's ancestors for ever, and its signboard was written by Sin Jam (1491–1554), whose pen name was Yeongcheonja. The building standing today was moved to this site in 1975 because of the construction of Andong Dam. It is an L-shaped building three kan wide and two-and-a-half kan deep — a kan being the traditional bay-length between pillars — with a hip-and-gable roof whose gable end resembles the shape of the character for the number eight. Geunggudang is modest in scale and unadorned in its finish, but the broad wooden floor at its front gives it a sense of ease and refinement, marking it as a building of the mid-Joseon period or later.
