This is a single woodblock-printed volume of poetry and prose by the eminent early Joseon monk Hamheo, whose ordained name was Gihwa. According to its publication record, the book was printed in July 1440, the 22nd year of King Sejong, at Bongamsa Temple in Mungyeong by his disciple Munsu. It contains the Yeongga-jip sipjang chansong byeongseo, a commentary with preface on the Yeongga-jip (Anthology of Yongjia); sixteen verses summarising the essence of the Wongakgyeong (Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment) titled Wongakgyeong song; thirty-one verses on the Beophwagyeong (Lotus Sutra) titled Beophwagyeong song; and the Daeseunggisillon seokje byeongseo, a commentary with preface on the Awakening of Mahayana Faith, among other works. It also includes numerous pieces in which Hamheo praises and reflects on his own experience of enlightenment, and others extolling the merit of Amitabha Buddha, the virtues of the Pure Land, and the merit of attaining rebirth there through invocation of the Buddha's name. This book brings together Seon (meditation), doctrinal study and invocation of the Buddha's name — the central concerns of Korean Buddhist practice — and is valued as an important source for tracing the origins of Buddhism in Korea.
