Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a figure painting depicting a scene of people composing poetry. In 1653, the fourth year of King Hyojong of Joseon, after a long drought the king personally performed a rain-prayer rite, and welcome rain fell soon after. To commemorate this, thirteen officials known as okseosin from the Hongmungwan, the Office of Special Advisers, were gathered and set the poetic theme "Huiu" (joy at the rain), and asked to compose poems on it. A man named Seo Byeon won first place at this gathering and received as royal gifts one saddle, one tiger skin and five geun of pepper. This painting, together with a record of these events, sets down the scene on a single sheet; it measures 63 cm wide and 57.4 cm high. The painter is not known, but it is thought to have been either a noted painter of the time or Kim Hwi, who worked at the Hongmungwan and was also a literati painter. As a coloured painting it renders the figures and items of stationery in fine detail, and its refined style makes it valuable material for the study of figure painting of the mid-Joseon period.
