Huae Battery, Ganghwa
강화 후애돈대 · 江華 後崖墩臺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA dondae is a watch post built at points along a border or coastline within the territory that offer good visibility, used to observe enemy movements and prepare against attack; its outer wall is built up high like a fortress while the interior is kept low, with cannons installed inside. This is one of the 53 dondae of Ganghwa, built up in a square shape using granite; four platforms for mounting cannon were installed, and it is relatively well preserved. A section of the low parapet wall built along the top of the fortification is the only such remnant to survive, and the whole structure was fully restored in 1998. In the nearby village a legend is passed down that disaster will befall anyone who damages this dondae; because of this, the people have long treated and protected it like an altar, and its original form remains well preserved to this day. It was built in 1679, the 5th year of King Sukjong of Joseon, mobilising 2,000 troops of the Eoyeonggun (Royal Guard) together with 8,000 monk soldiers from the three provinces of Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Jeolla.
