Naksansa Temple Hongyemun Gate
낙산사홍예문 · 洛山寺虹霓門

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a rainbow-shaped stone gate built at the entrance to Naksansa Temple in 1467, the thirteenth year of King Sejo of Joseon, when the king visited the temple. At the time, Gangwon Province comprised twenty-six counties, and it is said that, at King Sejo's wish, the magistrate of each county contributed one stone, so that the Hongyemun (Rainbow Gate) was built from twenty-six granite blocks. Above the gate stands a gate tower built in 1963, measuring three kan (bays) across the front and one kan along the side. The tower is considered unusual for the way it makes skilful use of the surrounding terrain, with natural stones piled up around the arch stones on which it stands.
