Three-story Stone Pagoda at Maitreya Daewonji Site, Chungju
충주 미륵대원지 삼층석탑 · 忠州 彌勒大院址 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis three-story stone pagoda from the Goryeo period stands about 200 metres east of the Maitreya Daewonji Site, which contains a stone cave. This spot is presumed to be the pagoda's original location, though it is not known why it was erected so far from the temple site. The pagoda consists of a three-story body set on a two-tiered base, topped with a finial. Pillar shapes are carved into the stones of both the upper and lower bases and into the body stones. The second-story body stone is considerably shorter than the first, and the roof stones each have four-tiered supports on their undersides. Only the square support stone that once held the finial remains at the top. Overall, the pagoda faithfully follows the typical form of Unified Silla stone pagodas, but later stylistic features appear as a result of its later, Goryeo-period date, such as the reduction of the roof-stone underside supports to four tiers. It has a generally simple and refined appearance.
