Ganghwa Local Confucian School was founded in 1127, the fifth year of King Injong of Goryeo, as a national educational institution built to hold memorial rites for the Confucian sages and to educate local people. It was subsequently relocated and restored on several occasions; its present site dates from 1731, the seventh year of King Yeongjo, when it was moved here by Yu Cheok-gi, the Governor of Ganghwa. The surviving buildings include the Daeseongjeon, the shrine hall used for memorial rites, the Dongmu and Seomu (the east and west shrine buildings), and the Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall used for education, along with several other subsidiary buildings. During the Joseon period the school received land, servants and books from the state and carried out both memorial and educational functions, but its educational role has since disappeared, leaving only its function as a site of memorial rites.
