Gochangmujanggaeksa Temple
고창무장객사 · 高敞茂長客舍

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building served as the guest house of Mujang-hyeon during the Joseon dynasty, and was built in 1581, the 14th year of King Seonjo's reign. A guest house consisted of a main hall, where a tablet symbolising the king was enshrined and the county magistrate paid his respects on the first and fifteenth day of every month, and the left and right wings, which served as lodgings for officials sent down to the provinces by royal command. The main hall of this guest house extends down to just above it. The eyebrows are delicately shaped like a crescent moon, and the eyes are half-open; it is a building of three bays across the front and three bays to the side, with a single-eaved gable roof. The lower part of each stone base is worked into a square shape and the upper part into a hemispherical shape, with a round pillar set on top, and otherwise the building shows no particular distinguishing features. The right wing has a lower roof than the main hall, giving it a lower status within the overall composition. An outer gate, a middle gate and the left and right corridors also once stood here, but none of these survive. The stone steps leading up and down the stone platform are carved in relief with tiger and cloud motifs, adding a further touch of charm. In contrast to the front of the building, which retains almost its original form, the guest house building was altered in part while it was used as a township office; it was restored to its original form in 1990.
