Seonggonghoe Seoul Cathedral
성공회 서울성당 · 聖公會 서울聖堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a three-storey church building in the Romanesque style. After the missionary work of Bishop Corfe, the first Anglican (Seonggonghoe) bishop to come to Korea, laid the foundations for the church following his arrival in 1890, the twenty-seventh year of King Gojong of Joseon, the third bishop, Mark Trollope, had this cathedral built. Designed by the Englishman Dixon, construction began under the supervision of Brooke in 1922 and was completed in May 1926. The church has a cross-shaped floor plan. Granite was used for the foundations and part of the rear wall, while the remaining walls were built of red brick. Varying the height of different parts of the building throughout gives the whole a sense of rhythm and movement. The bell tower in particular is notable for the lively way the large central tower is joined to the smaller tower in front of it. Seonggonghoe Seoul Cathedral is of great historical significance as a full-scale building designed by a Westerner in the Romanesque style during the Japanese colonial period.
