Standing Stone Buddha in Yongbong-dong, Dalseong
달성 용봉동 석불입상 · 達城 龍鳳洞 石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMany Buddhist relics dating from the Silla period are scattered around Biseulsan Mountain in Daegu, and the site of this standing stone Buddha in Yongbong-dong is one of them. Carved from a 2.8 m block of granite, it shows a halo and a Buddha figure on one face of the stone; the figure holds a medicine jar in its left hand, identifying it as a representation of Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha. The head is bare, with a large topknot-shaped bun rising prominently, and the face has a full, plump impression. The halo, representing the light emanating from the Buddha's body, is boat-shaped, showing a circular head halo and a slender oval body halo rendered in raised lines. The carving technique seen in the figure and its halo appears to carry on the style of the late Unified Silla period.
