Cheongpung Paryeongnu Pavilion, Jecheon
제천 청풍 팔영루 · 堤川 淸風 八詠樓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis gate pavilion once served as the main entrance to the old Cheongpung-bu, the district office of Cheongpung. It came to be called Paryeongnu, meaning "Pavilion of Eight Odes," after Min Chi-sang, the magistrate during the reign of Emperor Gojong (r. 1863-1907), composed eight poems celebrating the Eight Scenic Views of Cheongpung. In 1702, the twenty-eighth year of King Sukjong of Joseon, the magistrate Yi Gi-hong built a gate on this site called Hyeondeongmun; in 1870, the seventh year of Emperor Gojong, the magistrate Yi Jik-hyeon rebuilt it. It was moved to its present location in 1983 because of the construction of the Chungju Dam. The pavilion measures three bays across the front and two bays in depth, with a paljak, or hip-and-gable, roof whose gable ends form the shape of the character 八, meaning "eight." Inside, a wooden floor is laid and enclosed by a railing.
