Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeowon were private educational institutions established during the Joseon dynasty that combined the commemoration of former sages with the education of students. Hogyeseowon was founded in 1575 to honour Toegye Yi Hwang (1501–1570), a leading scholar-official of the mid-Joseon period, and to train later generations of scholars. It was originally built in the Wolgok area of Yean-myeon, and at its founding was named Yeogang Seowon. It was one of the largest seowon in the Andong region, but was swept away in a great flood in 1605; the following year it was rebuilt slightly north of its original site. In 1620 it additionally enshrined Seoae Ryu Seong-nyong (1542–1607) and Hakbong Kim Seong-il (1538–1593), Toegye's foremost disciples, and in 1676 it received a royal charter naming it Hogyeseowon. It was demolished in 1871 by order of Heungseon Daewongun, who abolished seowon nationwide, and its lecture hall, Sunggyodang, was rebuilt in 1878. In 1973 it was relocated to Imha-ri owing to the construction of Andong Dam, and from 2018 it has been moved again to Dosan, where the shrine and other buildings were newly built. The new shrine enshrines the tablets of Toegye, Seoae and Hakbong together with that of Daesan Yi Sang-jeong (1711–1781), bringing together in one place the spirit tablets of four scholars who represent Confucian learning in Joseon.
