Bangnae-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda
방내리삼층석탑 · 坊內里三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis three-storey stone pagoda stands at a site said to have once been an old Silla temple. Houses now surround the pagoda, and no other trace of the temple remains. The base is badly damaged, so its original form cannot be determined; the three-storey body of the pagoda now rests directly on a small outcrop of bedrock. Pillar shapes are carved onto the corner posts of the body stones, and on the first-storey body stone, seated Buddha images are carved on all four sides. The undersides of the roof stones each carry three tiers of supporting eaves, and the thick, steeply sloping roof surfaces drain rainwater sharply. At the top, a bokbal (an upturned-bowl-shaped ornament) and an anghwa (an upward-opening lotus-shaped ornament) survive as the finial. This is a stone pagoda of the Goryeo period. Although the second-storey body stone is markedly smaller than the first, giving the whole a somewhat unbalanced proportion, the carving of Buddha images on the first-storey body stone is noteworthy.
