Inside a single stele pavilion below Gongbungnu Pavilion at Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju stand three steles side by side. They commemorate the achievements of three Ming Chinese generals, Yi Gong, Im Je and Nam Bang-wi, who were stationed in Gongju in 1598, the year after the Jeongyu War (the second Japanese invasion of Korea, in 1597), and protected the local people from the threat of Japanese troops. The steles were first erected by the Geumgang River in 1599, the 32nd year of King Seonjo, but were buried by a flood and later re-erected during the reign of King Sukjong. During the Japanese colonial period the characters 倭寇 ("wae-gu", meaning Japanese marauders) were defaced by the Japanese, and the steles were carelessly buried in the rear yard of the Gongju town office. After Korea's liberation they were moved to their present site.
