Samgunbu Chongmudang Hall
삼군부 총무당 · 三軍府 總武堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the office building of Samgunbu, the body in charge of military affairs during the Joseon dynasty. It was built in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong's reign, together with Deokuidang Hall and Cheongheondang Hall. It originally stood south of Gwanghwamun Gate, on the site of what is now the government complex there, but in the 1930s only Chongmudang, the central building of the Samgunbu office compound, was moved to its present location. The building measures seven bays across the front and four bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof whose sides form the shape of the character 八 ("eight"). The central three bays form a large wooden-floored hall, flanked on either side by a one-bay ondol-heated room, each with a storeroom beside it. Samgunbu Chongmudang Hall is a rare surviving example of a Joseon-period government office building.
