This is a single woodblock-printed volume recording the autobiographical life of Hyeneung, the Sixth Patriarch of the Seon school, describing his process of spiritual cultivation and the sermons he gave for his followers. It was first carved and printed in 1569, the second year of King Seonjo, at Haetalsa Temple in Sangwon, Pyeongan-do, and was later transferred to Simgoksa Temple, where it was printed again. Its notable features are, first, that it gave rise to a scholarly tradition emphasising the dharma lineage of Seon masters centred on Hyeneung; second, that it holds there is no Buddha apart from self-reflection; and third, that although the practice of the Seon school culminates in enlightenment, this text is held to be the fundamental basis for that practice. The main text offers commentary on ten sermons: Obeopjeonui, Seokgongdeokjeongto, Jeonghyeilche, Gyosujwaseon, Jeonhyangchamhoe, Chamcheonggiyeon, Namdonbukjeom, Dangjojingjo, Beommundaesi and Busokyutong. Printed in Chinese characters before the Imjin War, the Japanese invasions of Korea of 1592–1598, this book is a valuable early edition.
