명심보감판본 · 明心寶鑑板本

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis woodblock edition was compiled by Chu Jeok (1246-1317) of the Chugye Chu clan. Chu Jeok passed the state civil service examination in 1261, the second year of King Wonjong of Goryeo, and went on to hold posts including Minbusangseo (Minister of the Board of Revenue) and Yemun'gwan Jehak (academician of the Hall of Letters). Myeongsimbogam is an anthology drawing accessible, everyday-relevant passages from the writings of Confucius and other philosophers of the Hundred Schools, as well as from poetry, and it was compiled to serve as a basic textbook for cultivating the mind and character of students at state-founded schools. The edition that survives today descends from the Inheung Jaesa printing, published in 1869, the sixth year of Emperor Gojong, by Chu Se-mun; it was later translated into Korean and has since been widely used for education in homes and schools. Running to 31 leaves in total, it is the only surviving woodblock edition kept at Inheung Seowon. These woodblocks were also widely disseminated in China and Japan, and the text has even been translated into English, where it serves as material for Korean studies research.
