These woodblocks form the gangmok, a chronicle in the classical Chinese "outline-and-detail" format, of Samgang Oryun (the Three Bonds and Five Relationships, a core Confucian code of conduct), compiled in 1906 by Kim Pyeong-muk and Yu Jung-gyo, disciples of Yi Hang-no (pen name Hwaseo, 1792-1868). They gathered together texts from Song- and Yuan-dynasty China and from the Goryeo period, and produced the work to teach the people proper etiquette and virtuous customs. The woodblocks measure 33 cm across and 21 cm high, and a total of 1,382 blocks are currently preserved. Yi Hang-no was a highly respected Neo-Confucian scholar of the late Joseon period who, during the reign of Emperor Gojong, held posts including Byeolje of Jangwonseo (the Office of Royal Gardens) and Dosa of Jeolla Province, before rising to Champ'an (Vice Minister) of the Ministry of Works.
