Diamond Sutra Byeon Statue of Beomeosa Temple
범어사 금강반야바라밀경변상 · 梵魚寺 金剛般若바羅密經變相

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis book summarises the contents of the Diamond Sutra and explains it through illustrations; it was published at Gwangheungsa Temple in Andong in 1570, the third year of King Seonjo. "Diamond Sutra" is the short name for the full title of the sutra, which in Korea is the foundational scripture of the Jogye Order and, after the Heart Sutra, the most widely read Buddhist sutra. Illustrated frontispieces took one of two forms: inserted as illustrations within the body of the text, or placed at the front of the book. In the Goryeo period the inserted-illustration form was usual, while in the Joseon period it became standard to place the illustration at the front. This book, however, is laid out in two registers on each page, with an image above and the sutra text below, showing that illustrated-insert editions of the Diamond Sutra continued to be produced as late as the early Joseon period. It contains seventy-seven illustrations in total, making it a valuable resource not only for understanding the Diamond Sutra but also for the study of early Joseon painting.
