강화 적석사 사적비 · 江華 積石寺 事蹟碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAccording to records such as the Jeondeungsa Bonmalsaji (a history of Jeondeungsa Temple and its affiliated temples), Jeokseoksa Temple was founded together with Baengnyeonsa Temple and Cheongnyeonsa Temple in the fourth year of King Jangsu of Goguryeo (416), and tradition holds that it was originally named Jeongnyeonsa (赤蓮寺, 'Red Lotus Temple'). The memorial stele of Jeokseoksa Temple stands beside the path leading up to the temple. Erected in the fortieth year of King Sukjong (1714), it stands 3.94 metres tall overall, with the stele body itself 3.04 metres high and 69 centimetres wide. The stele is of granite and is topped with a roof-shaped capstone; at the top of the stele body is inscribed the title 'Goryeosan Jeokseoksaji-bi' (高麗山積石寺之碑, 'Stele of Jeokseoksa Temple on Goryeosan Mountain'). The inscription records the introduction of Buddhism to the temple and the history of its construction and repair, as well as the fact that the temple served as the king's residence when the Goryeo court moved its capital to Ganghwa to resist the Mongol invasions.
