Three-story Stone Pagoda of Bhaisajyaguru Temple
약사사 삼층석탑 · 藥師寺 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda originally stood directly in front of the main hall that once enshrined the standing stone Buddha of Bhaisajyaguru Temple, and it also reflects the temple's history. Standing on the hillside of Gaehwasan Mountain and looking down over the Hangang River, its form appears somewhat rustic yet also nimble. This stone pagoda has a distinctive form, consisting of a single-tier base and a three-storey body. The base has a large square platform stone set on a square foundation stone, topped with a cover stone made of a flat slab. On top of the rather massive base sits the first-storey body, which has corner pillars, topped with a large, steeply-pitched roof stone; the second- and third-storey bodies and roof stones are then stacked above. The body of the pagoda has a nimble form in contrast to its rustic base. This stone pagoda is of great value both as a fine example of the characteristics of stone pagodas from the late Goryeo to early Joseon period, and as a rare surviving example of a stone pagoda from that time.
