Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe printing woodblocks of the Mangu Hall Collected Works were carved to print the poetry, prose, chronological biography and appendices of Gwak Jae-u, who was the first to raise a righteous army at the outbreak of the Japanese invasion of 1592 and distinguished himself in battle. The text was revised and expanded through three separate printings; the surviving woodblocks are those of the third printing, published in the forty-seventh year of King Yeongjo (1771). The appended Changuirok printing woodblocks were carved to print the Yongmieum-mirok, a roster of those who joined Gwak Jae-u when he raised a righteous army at Uiryeong during the 1592 invasion, together with the Hwawangseongdonggorok and the Hwawangsugakrok, rosters of the righteous scholars of Gyeongsang-do who defended Hwawangsanseong Fortress in Changnyeong alongside Gwak Jae-u during the renewed Japanese invasion of 1597. These works were edited and compiled by Gwak Won-gap and others; a preface was obtained from the governor of Gyeongsang-do, Jo Hyeon-myeong, in the eighth year of King Yeongjo (1732), and a further preface from the governor Kim Si-hyeong in the tenth year of King Yeongjo (1734). This is a valuable source for research into the history of the Japanese invasions of Korea, particularly the activities of the Gyeongsang-do region.
