Yeonghwa Hakdang (now Yeonghwachodeung School) was an educational institution established for missionary purposes to provide modern-style education. The main school building of Yeonghwachodeung School was built on a 1,226-pyeong site on Ugak-hyeon Hill (the land purchased in 1909); construction of the three-storey building, with a total floor area of 212 pyeong, began on 30 March 1910 and was completed on 14 September 1911. The building stands on the eastern hill near the women missionaries' dormitory (now the Incheon Christian Social Welfare Center), the men missionaries' dormitory (formerly the Dongincheon Tax Office building) and Appenzeller's residence (now a substation); it is thought to have been built close to the women missionaries' dormitory in particular because most of the teachers at the time were female missionaries. The building originally had a cross-shaped plan formed by a projecting entrance section, but only traces of this remain after the projecting part at the entrance was extended in 1954. Apart from the extended sections, the building is well preserved in its original form; it is built of traditional red brick, each brick measuring on average 227 x 109 x 59 mm.
