This stone-carved celestial map is said to have come from the area submerged by the Daecheong Dam reservoir in Munui-myeon, Cheongwon-gun, North Chungcheong Province, and was purchased by the National Science Museum. At the top of its front face, the characters 天文圖 ("celestial map") are carved large in seal script, and below them two large circles are drawn as concentric rings forming a border, within which thirty Western constellations, mainly those visible in winter and spring, are engraved. The shapes of the constellations depicted match those of modern constellations, and their positions are rendered accurately, although the size of the stars is not varied according to brightness. It is presumed to have been made before the late nineteenth century, and, judging from the sophistication of the method used to depict the constellations and the precision with which their positions are carved into the stone, it is likely that it was made for some special purpose.
