This was a place where men from this region who had passed the state examinations gathered to discuss matters concerning the region's development and the promotion of good customs. It was built in the early Joseon period, but after falling into disrepair it was rebuilt in the 10th year of King Sunjo (1810). Those who had passed the saengwon and jinsa licentiate examinations, together with those who had passed the higher state examination, gathered at Gyeryeondang to strengthen the bonds of friendship among themselves and worked to enlighten the local people and correct their customs. It also served as a kind of council of elders, putting forward proposals and advice on political affairs. When the state examination system was abolished in the 31st year of Emperor Gojong (1894), the gathering also came to an end, but its descendants have since organised an association to maintain and manage it. The building measures three kan across the front and three kan to the side, with a hip-and-gable roof whose side takes the shape of the character 八 (eight). There is a narrow wooden veranda at the front, with a heated ondol room on the left and a wooden-floored hall on the right.
