Gohadoichungmugong Memorial
고하도이충무공기념비 · 高下島李忠武公紀念碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele stands on Gohado Island, part of Mokpo, honouring the outstanding strategy of General Yi Sun-sin, posthumously titled Lord Chungmu. During the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598, the general judged that stockpiling military provisions was essential above all else to secure victory, and is said to have stored grain on this island, a strategically important location. Construction of the stele was begun by Naval Commander Oh Jung-ju and completed in August 1722, the second year of King Gyeongjong, by Yi Bong-sang, Yi Sun-sin's fifth-generation descendant. Nam Gu-man composed the inscription and Jo Tae-gu wrote the calligraphy; the stele is now preserved beneath a large stele pavilion.
