Dasolsa Temple Boanam Hermitage Seokgul, Sacheon
사천 다솔사 보안암 석굴 · 泗川 多率寺 普安庵 石窟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBoanam Hermitage, in Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, was established in May 1947, but the grotto itself is said to have been used by monks for religious practice as early as the late Goryeo period. It is a tomb-shaped grotto formed by stacking natural stones in a stepped, terrace-like fashion; from the outside it is nearly square, about 9 m across the front and 7 m along the side. Two pillars stand at the front to form the entrance, and the upper surface rises in a gently sloping, rounded shape. Inside the grotto stand a stone seated Buddha image about 1.8 m tall and sixteen images of arhats, simply carved from natural stone. The ceiling is formed by two long stones laid east-west, with a further long stone laid across them on top. Although this man-made grotto differs somewhat in scale, plan and the Buddhist images it enshrines, it follows the style of Seokguram Grotto (National Treasure) and the Rock-carved Buddha Triad at Gunwi (National Treasure), and is thought to date from the Goryeo period.
