This is a standing stone Buddha enshrined in the main hall (geumdang) of Bhaisajyaguru Temple. Bhaisajyaguru Temple was built on the slope of Gaehwasan Mountain in Gimpo between the end of Goryeo and the early Joseon period. Above the statue's head sits a flat, hat-shaped canopy stone. The face, which appears simple and unaffected, is a long oval, with large eyes and nose and a small mouth. The shoulders appear drawn in, and the straight body stands like a stone pillar, without a sense of volume. The arms, which run a long way down to the elbows before gathering at the chest, are very slender, and the small hands hold a flowering branch, identifying the statue as a standing image of Maitreya Buddha. This statue, which shows well the characteristics of stone Buddhas made between the end of Goryeo and early Joseon, is of great value.
