Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese printing woodblocks are engraved with the record of Gwak Jun, whose pen name was Jonjae, who fought valiantly and died in battle during the Japanese invasions of Korea. Gwak Jun was a cousin of Gwak Jae-u. In the 27th year of King Seonjo (1594) he became magistrate of Aneung County and was defending Hwangseoksanseong Fortress when the fortress fell; he died in battle together with his family. After his death he was posthumously appointed chamui, an assistant minister, in the Ministry of War, and was given the posthumous title Chungnyeol, meaning "loyal and valiant". This biographical record (silgi) was compiled in the 21st year of King Sukjong (1695), and the surviving woodblocks were carved in the 42nd year of King Yeongjo (1766) and are preserved in the woodblock hall of Yeyeon Seowon. This is valuable material for research into the history of the Japanese invasions of Korea, particularly the activities of the Gyeongsang Province region.
