White Porcelain Underglaze Cobalt Blue Peony Design Ho
백자청화모란문호 · 白磁靑畵牧丹文壺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis white porcelain jar has an upright rim, a swelling shoulder, and a body whose sides curve slightly inward towards the base — a typical standing jar (ipho) of the late Joseon period. Paintings of the period show that jars of this kind were used less in daily life than on various ceremonial occasions. The jar was shaped on the wheel, but traces remain on the inner wall showing that the upper and lower sections were made separately and then joined. The clay used is white clay mixed with fine impurities, and the glaze gives it a pale greyish-white tone. The glazed surface is covered overall with dense crackling, and the inside of the foot has a pinkish tinge, showing that the temperature at the bottom of the kiln was low when the porcelain was fired. The design was painted in underglaze cobalt-blue pigment before the glaze was applied, and the colour produced is not a clear blue but closer to a dark blackish-blue, suggesting that the pigment contained impurities. Judging from the style of the design and the condition of the pigment, the jar is thought to have been made between the late 18th and early 19th century.
