This is a government school (gwanhak) built at Cheongan in the early Joseon period to enshrine and hold memorial rites for the spirit tablets of virtuous Confucian scholars, and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction for local people. It is not known exactly when it was built, but since the Samaso (a hall for local scholars who had passed the lower state examinations) was built in 1703, the 29th year of King Sukjong, the hyanggyo is presumed to have been built before that date. The present buildings were dismantled and restored between 1979 and 1981. The layout follows the arrangement of hall in front, shrine behind: Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall used for study, stands at the front, while Daeseongjeon, the shrine used for rites, stands at the rear. Daeseongjeon enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius together with those of Confucian scholars from China and Korea. The signboard of Myeongnyundang is said to have been written in 1733, the ninth year of King Yeongjo. During the Joseon dynasty the school was run with land, slaves, and books granted by the state, but its educational function has since disappeared, and only the function of holding memorial rites remains today.
