Seated Rock-carved Buddha on Bonghwa Mountain, Gimhae
김해 봉화산 마애여래좌상 · 金海 烽火山 磨崖如來坐像

This is a rock-carved Buddha on the cliff face of Bonghwa Mountain, where a hermitage known as Jaam and a beacon-fire station once stood. A seated Buddha of the Goryeo period, worked in a combination of relief and incised line, it stands 2.45 m high with a knee height of 1.7 m, and was found wedged sideways in a crevice among the towering rock faces partway up the mountain. The Buddha has no halo; the head bears smooth, unadorned hair and a large usnisha, the raised knot symbolising enlightenment. The dignified face has full cheeks, and the outer corners of the half-closed eyes are turned upward. Although somewhat damaged, the well-proportioned bridge of the nose, the small mouth, and the ears hanging down to the shoulders together display a highly refined sense of harmony.
