The Seonggonghoe Rectory in Onsu-ri, Ganghwa was built in 1898, two years after Father Jo Maga — who had come to Korea from England together with Bishop Go Yohan, the first missionary bishop — was posted to Ganghwa in 1896 and began missionary work there, at the time when the Anglican Church (Seonggonghoe) was first being introduced to Korea. When the rectory later fell into disrepair, it was restored to its original form in 1933, and it survives in that form today. This rectory is a residential building that allows us to infer how an English priest, at the start of Anglican missionary work, adapted to Korea's traditional dwelling culture. At the same time, its construction techniques and woodworking methods show a building that is not simply Korean in form, but one that reveals how Korean builders absorbed and technically accommodated the requirements of their English clients. The building takes the form of a single-layered structure with a five-purlin, four-bay frame, built of brick in a 'ㄷ'-shaped (U-shaped) plan.
