Empress Myeongseong Tanganggu-ri Stele
명성황후탄강구리비 · 明成皇后誕降舊里碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele was erected to commemorate the old village where Empress Myeongseong (1851–1895) was born. It stands within a stele pavilion immediately beside her birth house. Empress Myeongseong was the consort of Emperor Gojong of the Korean Empire, and was posthumously honoured as empress after her death. On the front of the stele body (the inscribed portion), large, neatly written characters at the centre read 明成皇后誕降舊里 ('Tanganggu-ri of Empress Myeongseong'), meaning the old village where Empress Myeongseong was born. On the back is an inscription stating that it was 'respectfully written, with head bowed and eyes brimming with tears, on a certain day in the fifth month of the gapjin year, the eighth year of the Gwangmu era (1904).' As the writer's name is not recorded, it cannot be identified with certainty. The Empress Myeongseong Tanganggu-ri Stele takes the bangbugaeseok form: the stele body stands on a square base, topped with a roof stone shaped like the hipped-and-gabled roof of a traditional Korean house.
