Seosan Government Office Gate and Oe Government Office
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

During the Joseon period this was the government office of Seosan-gun, made up of a guest hall (gaekgwan), a dongheon (the main hall where official business was conducted), pavilions and other buildings, of which only the government office gate and the Oe Government Office now remain. They were rebuilt in 1867, the fourth year of Emperor Gojong, by the then Seosan magistrate O Byeong-seon. Between 1978 and 1979 the dongheon was relocated and rebuilt to the west of Seosan City Hall, and the government office gate was also repaired. The government office gate was the main gate of the Seosan-gun government office and now stands at the entrance to Seosan City Hall. It is a two-storey gate-tower building of three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with an ornate hip-and-gable roof whose sides form the shape of the character 八 (eight). On the ground floor, square wooden pillars are set on stone-pillar-shaped bases, with a door hung between each pair of pillars to allow passage. The upper floor has a raised wooden floor surrounded by a railing. A board on the front reads 'Seoryeong-gunmun' (瑞寧郡門), Seoryeong being the old name for Seosan. The Oe Government Office was where official business was handled. It is a hip-and-gable-roofed building of five bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a half-bay veranda running around all four sides. The tall, stone-pillar-shaped bases set on its east side suggest that it originally had a raised wooden floor. A board reading 'Seoryeonggwan' (瑞寧館) hangs at the centre of the front. The dongheon is a relatively large and elegant building that well illustrates the government-office architectural style of the late Joseon period.
