Three-story Stone Pagoda at Daegyeonsa Temple Site
대견사지 삼층석탑 · 大見寺址三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda remains at the site of an old temple partway up Biseulsan Mountain. Standing at the edge of a high cliff, it consists of a three-storey pagoda body set upon a two-tiered platform, and had lain fallen, together with various other stones from within the temple grounds, until it was finally restored in 1988. Unlike ordinary pagodas, it uses a high outcrop of the cliff itself as its base stone, with the platform and pagoda body placed directly on top. Apart from pillar-shaped carvings at the corners of the platform and of the pagoda body, there is almost no other ornamentation, giving it a plain, unadorned character. It is presumed to date from the ninth century, in the Unified Silla period, at the same time as the temple's founding. Although it lay collapsed for many years, it has lost none of its dignity, and indeed exudes a majesty as if commanding the surrounding mountain scenery.
