Roof-tile fragments inscribed with the name 'Yongunsa' have been found in the area around this Buddha — the Seated Yongunsa Temple Epitaph Tablet Jo Vairocana Buddha — showing that a temple once stood here. The statue survives in relatively complete form, having lost only its halo. The head is covered with small snail-shell curls, and the plump face wears a naturally smiling, lifelike expression. The robe draped over both shoulders is rendered thinly, revealing the curves of the body beneath it well. The folds of the robe are stylised into stepped ridges, and the winding lines are rendered formulaically, inheriting features from late Unified Silla Buddhas such as the Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha of Chukseosa Temple (a treasure); the statue shows the characteristics of an early Goryeo Buddha made in this lineage. The hand gesture, with the right hand wrapped around the index finger of the left, identifies the figure as Vairocana Buddha. The pedestal on which the Buddha sits is a three-tiered square base carved with large lotus-petal designs and ansang (arch-shaped niche motifs). Inheriting the characteristics of Vairocana Buddha images popular in the late Unified Silla period, this is an early Goryeo Buddha made from a new perspective.
