Seated Stone Buddha at Daedongsa Temple Site, Hapcheon
합천 대동사지 석조여래좌상 · 陜川 大同寺址 石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue stands at the site of Daedongsa Temple in Daeyang-myeon, Hapcheon-gun, South Gyeongsang Province, seated on an octagonal lotus-patterned pedestal. Although the face is badly worn, the statue is otherwise well preserved. A tall, topknot-shaped bun rises from the head, and the robe covers both shoulders. The chest is broadly exposed, and the folds of the robe flowing down from the upper body cover the knees. The right hand rests on the knee with the fingertips pointing downward, forming the bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture symbolising the subjugation of demons of the earth. The pedestal consists of upper, middle and lower sections: the upper section is carved with blooming lotus petals and the lower section with inverted lotus petals. On each of the eight faces of the middle section is carved an armoured, helmeted guardian deity. Judging from the style of a nearby stone lantern, the statue is presumed to date from the Unified Silla period.
