Syalteureuseongbaoro Convent Cathedral
샬트르성바오로수녀원성당 · 샬트르聖바오로修女院聖堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in 1927, this chapel was constructed by Bishop Demange, the first head of the Catholic Archdiocese, extending northward from the arcade on the right side of the Cominet Hall at Syalteureuseongbaoro Convent. It is a small chapel with a rectangular plan elongated along a north-south axis; when built, it had a pentagonal altar to the north and, on the second floor inside the main entrance on the south arcade, a choir loft. The exterior walls are built of red brick on a granite foundation, with grey brick used for the engaged pilasters that shape the façade. The interior ceiling is vaulted, and the window openings in the exterior walls are pointed-arch windows. The roof is gabled and finished with folded galvanised-iron sheeting. Among the surviving modern Western-style buildings in Daegu, it is considered an important structure, not only well preserved but also representative of the stylistic features of church architecture of the period and of the broader stylistic currents in the history of modern Korean architecture. It can also be said to hold historical significance as a building that embodies one chapter in the history of Catholicism in Daegu.
